DO YOU SHOOT INDOORS OR OUTDOORS? Well, in a way I do both. I have an amazing natural light studio. We’re inside and comfortable with central air conditioning, central heat, private changing rooms, a lovely lounge. BUT, we have 20 foot high walls of north natural light. So, you get the benefit of soft, flattering, natural light, without the danger of being too hot, too cold, or dealing with wind or “lookie loos.” That said, we also have ample professional lighting to supplement our natural light when we need it, or IF we want it. And on occasion, if it’s right for the shoot and if the client wants, we can easily take it outside and shoot in amazing spaces around the studio.
WHERE IS YOUR STUDIO? The studio is centrally located in the beautiful and upscale Larchmont Village area of Los Angeles. We’re a “stones throw” away from Paramount studios, but on a lovely street with tons of hip little cafes and coffee houses. Best of all, our studio has central air, central heat, private changing rooms, a client lounge, music, beverages, and private, secure, garage parking for out clients.
DO YOU PRICE BASED ON “LOOKS?” Sort of. I do things a bit differently. To me, a “look” is a goal. So, I will often offer to shoot MORE than one outfit per look. FREE of charge. I’m not about counting how many times you change a shirt. That idea benefits a photographer, but not the photographer’s clients. So, while I do have packages based on “looks,” you’ll usually get more than you paid for. Expect to get more than you expected.
WHAT IS A LOOK? A look is a single change of wardrobe, or a change to hair and makeup. Taking on or off a coat, or putting on glasses, or taking off glasses, is not considered a change of looks. But, as I said above, I think of “looks” a tad differently and I will often offer to shoot more than one outfit per look at no additional charge.
DO YOU HELP ME DETERMINE MY LOOKS? Yes. And I’m good at it. BUT, I tell all my clients to remember that your most important look is you being YOU, with all the colors that define you coming through. Your intelligence, your charisma, your sensitivity, your edginess, your quirkiness, your unique internal story. Knowing this and owning this is internal to creating the most effective imagery, and if we do it right, YOU will shine through no matter what you wear. But, that all said, for more specific stuff, if you need my help, feel free to ask as I’m really good at helping you define and SUGGEST your castability.
MAY AGENT WANTS ME TO WEAR A LAB COAT TO SHOW I CAN PLAY A DOCTOR. Then fire your agent. I want you to do it right. I want you to do it in a way that makes you look like a working actor. I don’t believe you need to wear extreme costumes because that makes you look desperate. I don’t want your shots saying “I’m a wannabe actor desperately looking or any work.” I want your headshots to say “I’m a working actor,” or at least make people PERCEIVE you that way.
DO YOU HAVE A PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE? I take interesting, creative and dynamically composed photos. I will sometimes crop closely, or crops off the top of heads, or shoot off center to create a compelling and dynamic composition and a sense of movement. I’m known for making eyes pop. And I’m known for a sense of honesty in my shots. They are truthful, authentic expressions of the actor that reveal inner life. Because this draws the attention of casting directors.
WHAT IS THE VIBE LIKE AT YOUR SHOOTS? My shoots are fun, silly, lots of laughter. But prepare to work hard. I’d describe my shoot persona as part clown, part coach, and part provocateur. Laughter is a vital part of my process. But, I’m also here to bring out truth, and I’m not afraid to point out to my clients when they’re “posing” or coming from the outside. I will sometimes push my clients to get them to deeper or more truthful place. But I always push myself even harder. Nobody will work harder to get you the besty headshot. That all said, we’re gonna laugh a lot.
YOU’RE BOOKED OUT A MONTH IN ADVANCE, CAN I GET IN SOONER? For clients that have already booked a session, I do keep a cancellation waiting list and you’re welcome to be on it. I’m super vigilant about calling you in the event we get a cancellation and can bring you in earlier.
YOU SHOOT CELEBRITIES, BUT WHAT ABOUT NEW PEOPLE: People are people. All of my clients are treated equally. I make no distinction based on where you are in your career. I only care about empowering each client with the best headshots.
WHEN DO I GET MY PHOTOS? I work very quickly so you don’t have to wait. Unlike most studios, I don’t make you wait a long time for your images, In fact, my clients are guaranteed that they’ll receive their photos within 3 business days of their shoot. But, honestly, I usually get them to you much sooner, often the very next day. That’s the way I roll.
DO I GET ALL MY PHOTOS? I will go through your session to eliminate the “blinks and blurs” and the truly awkward expressions, but generally my clients receive 600+ images per session. Not just a lot of looks, but a lot of range.
ARE THE IMAGES I RECEIVE HIGH-RESOULTION? Unlike many studios, I release your full-sized, high-resolution images with NO watermark. That means you get the original, super big images. You paid for your images, you OWN the masters. No games here. No upsell. You paid for them, you own them.
CAN I USE THE IMAGES ANY WAY I PLEASE? I give you virtually unlimited use of the master files without restrictions. Although I do require photo credit when the mages are published in magazines (either online of print). If they are to be published, please contact me directly for photo credit as I own copyright to the images.
SHOULD I TAG YOU IF I POST MY IMAGES ON ON SOCIAL MEDIA? Yes. Please. When posting on Social Media, please tag @KennethDolinPhotography on INSTAGRAM.
DO I NEED TO BOOK HAIR AND MAKEUP? I strongly recommend that my female clients have hair/makeup because most of them don’t have the skill level to do it correctly for photographs. In addition, I want you to focus on your work as an actor, not on the external. For male clients, makeup and hair is not always necessary.
I’VE HAD BAD MAKEUP AT HEADSHOTS IN THE PAST, SO I’M CONCERNED: Our makeup artist work for YOU. Do not be afraid to tell them what you want, and to direct them a bit. It’s a collaboration. We’re here to get you what you want, and we are totally open to your notes and ideas. We’ll throw some ideas out, as well. Together we’ll make it work. But we do not ever shoot a hair/makeup look without you first looking at it, and giving your notes and/or your approval. So don’t be shy about expressing your thoughts and you’ll be sure to get hair and makeup that you love.
CAN I DO MY OWN HAIR AND MAKEUP? While I strongly recommend having my makeup/hair people here, you are welcome to do your own hair and makeup. Some clients really know what works and have the skills to rock it. But if you’re not really good at it, consider having one of our pros.
CAN I BRING MY OWN MAKEUP ARTIST? I generally discourage outside makeup artists, as I don’t know their work of if they will work well with my process. But, if you sign off on being totally responsible for how the hair and makeup is, and the speed with which your person works, I will definitely consider letting you bring your person.
DO WE NEED TO MEET BEFORE THE SHOOT? No, it's not necessary to meet prior to your scheduled appointment. We will send you all the information you need to prepare well ahead of your shoot.
I GET NERVOUS ABOUT HEADSHOTS: I tell my acting clients that this is not a photo shoot, it’s an acting job. Let go. Let yourself fail. Trust that you are enough. Play with me. Breathe. Laugh. Don’t stress on results. Just let go and I’ll make you forget that you’re being photographed.
WHAT ABOUT WARDROBE? I will send you all the information that you need to prepare your wardrobe before your shoot. I also have an outside stylist if you need some help planning your wardrobe. I’ll share her info before you shoot.
CAN I BRING MY OWN MUSIC? Yes, of course you can bring music-whatever puts you in the mood. We also have a selection of music at the studio. And Amazon Alexa.

DO I NEED TO RETOUCH MY PHOTOS: Retouching is NECESSARY for 99.9% of people. The image is the foundation, the retouching makes the house built on the foundation. We strongly recommend retouching.
YOU DO RETOUCHING? I don’t do retouching in-house as I focus on photography. But, I have two amazing referral retouchers that have both worked with my and my clients for over 10 years. I will give you their information at your shoot, along with information on how to contact them and order retouching.
