Range, Not “Looks.”
As the industry leader in headshots for over 20 years, I’ve learned that in headshots, range beats “looks” every time. Casting directors are looking for a range of emotional connections and a range of expressions and a range of visually from more natural to more refined. They are looking for possibility. Emotional range, subtle shifts in expression, and the ability to move from open and grounded to intense or seductive or silly within the same session tells a far more compelling story than 27 outfit changes ever could. It’s not about being in character. It’s about emotional connection. When a headshot reveals access to your INNER LIFE, it opens doors.
Range also shows up in thoughtful shifts in wardrobe and makeup. A more natural, stripped-down look can communicate honesty and relatability. A slightly more refined or sophisticated look can suggest confidence, intelligence, or status. A touch of edge can hint at unpredictability or grit. But none of this is about costume. It’s about calibration. The goal isn’t to transform into some character, it’s to show multiple aspects of you.
I call this the “working actor approach” to headshots. Because, I know that it’s better to look like a working actor than an actor looking for work. The difference is subtle but powerful. One is grounded, connected, and emotionally available. The other is trying to impress. In the end, casting doesn’t hire the fabric on your back — they respond to the fabric of your soul. And range is what lets them see it.
Hope that helps. …Let’s shoot!
